Фонд Билла и Мелинды Гейтс (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) был основан в 2000 году. За это время Фонд израсходовал на различные благотворительные цели (в основном на борьбу с болезнями и голодом на планете) десятки миллиардов долларов США.
В текущем 2015 году Фонд сосредоточит свою деятельность на решении таких глобальных проблем как малярия и ВИЧ/СПИД, появятся и новые направления деятельности упомянутое повышение производительности растениеводства в Африке, а также проекты по внедрению новых технологий в образование и банковскую сферу.
Гейтс вложил деньги в разработку вакцин
Билл и Мелинда Гейтс пожертвовали 50 миллионов долларов Стэнфордскому университету (США) на ускоренную разработку вакцин против смертоносных болезней мира.
В течение десяти лет грант будет поддерживать усилия ученых Центра иммунологии Стэнфордского университета. Они смогут исследовать вакцины для борьбы с различными заболеваниями, в том числе ВИЧ и малярией.
По словам Билла Гейтса, такие болезни, как полиомиелит и корь ученые уже научились предотвращать, но зато зашли в тупик в своих усилиях по борьбе с ВИЧ и малярией.
В прошлом у Центра не хватало средств на проведение исследований. Грант в размере 50 миллионов долларов, несомненно, поможет им в продвижении научно-исследовательских проектов. Кроме разработок вакцин они смогут использовать средства на проведение исследований, которые позволят ученым понять, почему некоторые люди от природы способны защищаться от возбудителей смертельных заболеваний лучше, чем другие.
Профессор Школы медицины Стэнфордского университета, который будет руководить новым центром, отметил, что человечеству нужно новое поколение вакцин и новые подходы к вакцинации. Для этого нужно более глубоко изучить человеческие иммунные реакции и уметь четко предсказывать эффективность вакцин в отношении конкретных заболеваний. Средства, выделенные семьей Гейтс, в какой-то мере позволят добиться этого.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced Friday that it chose to donate $50 million to Stanford University to fast-track vaccine development for the world's deadliest diseases.
Over 10 years, the grant will support the efforts of the Stanford Human Systems Immunology Center on researching for vaccines to combat various diseases, including HIV and malaria, Reuters reported.
"While illnesses like polio and measles are now readily preventable, scientists have been stymied in their efforts to fight diseases such as HIV and malaria," according to the statement.
The center has struggled in the past due to cost and time issues, so receiving the $50 million grant will surely aid them in moving forward on their research projects. Aside from vaccine developments, they will also distribute some of the funds to research aimed at helping scientists understand why some people can ward off pathogens better than others, according to CBS Local.
"What we need is a new generation of vaccines and new approaches to vaccination," said Mark Davis, a professor at Stanford's School of Medicine, who will lead the new center.
"This will require a better understanding of the human immune response and clearer predictions about vaccine efficacy for particular diseases," he said in the statement.
The Gates Foundation was founded by the husband and wife Bill and Melinda in 2000 to provide assistance to healthcare and reduce poverty globally. In the United States, the foundation has given grants to several universities for educational opportunities and access to information technology. Some of the recipients include Cornell University, Carnegie Mellon University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Texas at Austin, and other schools.

Two new tools to fight AIDS should be available by 2030 in the form of a vaccine and new intense drug treatments, ending most cases of a disease that has killed millions in the past 30 years, Bill Gates said.
The Microsoft founder, whose philanthropic foundation has poured millions of dollars into medical research, told the World Economic Forum in Davos the "two miracles" were within reach in the coming years.
"We're pretty optimistic in this 15-year period we will get those two new tools," Gates told a session late on Friday.
A vaccine is seen as pivotal in preventing new infections among susceptible populations, while new kinds of intense drug treatments should do away with the need for life-long pills, he said.
Gates, whose Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation plays a major role in funding medical research, is also optimistic about the fight against malaria, where work on a vaccine is more advanced than for AIDS.
GlaxoSmithKline filed the world's first malaria vaccine for approval in July last year.
"We won't see the end of AIDS," Gates told the forum. "But both for malaria and AIDS we're seeing that the tools that will let us do 95 to 100 percent reduction, those tools will be invented during this 15-year period."
Bill and Melinda Gates predicted in their annual letter on the work of their foundation this week that the lives of people in poor countries would improve faster in the next 15 years than at any other time in history.
