The NGO ‘AGIHAS’ – a support group for people living with HIV and AIDS, and the Baltic HIV Association, as well as the Association of LGBT people and their friends ‘Mozaika’, with ViiV Healthcare’s financial support are jointly organising a major project ‘Coalition for Change’, which will take place over (the next) two years.
The coalition partners will be doing educational work, research into society’s knowledge about HIV and its prevention, as well as society’s attitude towards People Living with HIV. They will then seek solutions to these challenges so that insufficient information, prejudice and homophobia should not be reasons for the spread of HIV.
‘AGIHAS’ – a support group for people living with HIV and AIDS - as a part of the project will be organizing a three day Meeting from 26 - 29 May, 2016. The Conference is for People Living with HIV and AIDS and their supporters from the Baltic Sea Region (Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Poland and Latvia) to be able to meet in Latvia with the goal of clarifying the real situation of people affected by HIV/AIDS (including access to medical treatment) in the Baltic Sea Region, and exchange information about the partner organisations’ experience in working with People with HIV/AIDS, the government sector and society. The aspect of ‘working with society’ will receive particular attention, as Latvian society’s prejudice, ignorance and fear often stigmatize People living with HIV/AIDS, and show up as open hostility towards them, and a desire to isolate them from the rest of society. It is the prevalence of these attitudes that make it so important to reduce or eradicate them.
‘AGIHAS’ invites you to attend this international gathering and share your country’s experience and the situation of MSM patients in society, particularly highlighting problems that face People living with HIV/AIDS so that a joint regional platform of co-operation could be established.
It is time to finally understand that HIV can affect anyone, regardless of their age, gender, social situation or sexual orientation.
